Cancer Incidence in Sweden 2008

This publication presents the incidence and prevalence of cancer in Sweden. It comprises the material for 2008 and a description of trends covering the period of 1960-2008.

Summary

The Swedish Cancer Registry was established in 1958 and has been used to monitor cancer incidence in Sweden and trends over time. The aim is to provide national cancer incidence data to the public in a timely and accurate manner. The purpose of the register is also to provide a data source for clinical and epidemiological research and to facilitate international comparisons.

This publication is the 51st annual report on the incidence of cancer in Sweden from the Swedish Cancer Registry. It comprises the material for 2008 and a description of trends covering the period of 1960-2008. The report is mainly targeted towards the medical community and researchers but of course it may be of interest also to media and the general public.

Site and histopathology ("morphology") of the tumors has been coded in the ICD-O/3 systems of topography and morphology as of January 1st 2005 in the Swedish cancer register. In the present publication, ICD-O/3 figures for coding site have been translated to comply with earlier ICD-7 praxis, and are presented in the main tables according to ICD-7. Table W1 shows that, for all practical purposes, such a translation is feasible.
