Application for specialist qualification if you were trained in a country outside the EU/EEA

The information on this page applies if you are a dental practitioner, a doctor of medicine or a nurse who received specialist training in another country than the EU countries, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

Dental practitioner

If you have started or completed specialist dental training outside the EU/EEA, you are obliged to go through Swedish specialist dental training (ST) before applying for an evidence of specialist qualification in Sweden. To be allowed to start ST, you must hold a licence to practise as a dental practitioner issued by Socialstyrelsen. An additional condition is that you have performed a minimum of two years of practise as a general practitioner. Once you have fulfilled the requirements, turn to the dental schools or the county councils in Sweden to apply for a specialisation position.

When you have completed ST, you apply for an evidence of specialist qualification according to the same rules as those trained in Sweden. Read more about the application here (information in Swedish).

Doctor of medicine

If you have started or completed specialist medical training outside the EU/EEA, you are obliged to go through Swedish specialist medical training (ST) before applying for an evidence of specialist qualification in Sweden. To be allowed to start ST, you must hold a licence to practise as a doctor of medicine issued by Socialstyrelsen. Once you are licensed, turn to a hospital or a care giver to apply for a specialisation position.

When you have completed ST, you apply for an evidence of specialist qualification according to the same rules as those trained in Sweden. Read more about the application here (information in Swedish).

Nurse

If you have completed specialist training outside the EU/EEA, you must hold a licence to practise as a nurse issued by Socialstyrelsen before applying for permission to use a protected specialist nursing title in Sweden. Read more about the application here.
