The information on this page applies if you are a psychologist trained in another country than the EU countries, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.
In Sweden, psychologist is a protected professional title that may be used only by those who hold a licence to practise or are taking part in prescribed practical service (PTP). Only those are allowed to be employed as psychologists in Swedish health care.
If you are a psychologist trained in another country than the EU/EEA countries, the first thing you need is good knowledge of the Swedish language. After that you have to take courses to supplement your training and go through practical service. Only when all this is completed you may receive a Swedish licence to practise.
Step 1. Start by applying for an assessment of foreign training
Read more about how to apply for assessment here.
Step 2. Pass a course on social studies for psychologists (and other necessary supplemental training, if applicable)
Socialstyrelsen (The National Board of Health and Welfare) can demand that you supplement your theoretical education with certain elements after comparing it to Swedish training. However, it is obligatory to take a course on Swedish social studies for psychologists. Contact a university to register for such a course.
Step 3. Take part in practical service (PTP)
The practical service consists of at least six months under supervision.
Step 4. Receive a certificate of your knowledge of the Swedish language from your supervisor
To receive a Swedish licence to practise, you need to have sufficient knowledge of Swedish, Norwegian or Danish. The supervisor certifies your language skills when your practical service period is over.
Step 5. You can submit a formal application for a licence to practise, only after points 1-4 above have been fulfilled.
